Placing your newf in rescue?

Surrendering your pet is a huge and very difficult decision.  We recommend you consider taking the following actions beforehand to make the transition as smooth as possible.

Contact your breeder

A responsible breeder will be there for the lifetime of every dog they have bred and be glad to help. If you are uncomfortable or have concerns about contacting your breeder please let us know.

Locate your dogs AKC Registration paperwork

We will request that you turn the registration over with the dog to rescue. Also include any purchase contract or bill of sale you received with the dog. Your dog’s breeder may be notified that a dog of his/her breeding is in rescue.  If AKC registration papers are not available or the dog is registered with another registry, please be prepared to show evidence that the dog is a purebred.

Contact your Newfs veterinarian for a copy of your dogs vaccination and medical record

Please consider updating vaccinations or neutering your dog, if needed. All Newfs will be spayed or neutered before placement. Our rescue effort is funded entirely by donations and is staffed by volunteers.

Write up a summary of your dog including any information that would be useful to a new owner

Include information such as: feeding (type of food, frequency of feeding), treats enjoyed, favorite toys, habits (both good and bad), likes and dislikes (likes kids, chases cats, etc.), any training your dog has had, etc.

Contact the Newf Health & Rescue committee member closest to you to discuss your situation

You will be asked about the information from your summary and why you are giving up your Newf. Please be honest about any problems (medical, behavioral, etc.) your dog may have so we can do our best to find the right home for the dog.  NH&R Contacts
